Kaleidoscope Movie Magic – August 2018
This month’s selection is Begin Again.
It’s the story of a music producer down on his luck for largely self-inflicted reasons, who meets an unknown songwriter facing the crossroad decisions that arrive with fame and fortune. Through an innovative and lively collaboration, both regain their footing and create a new path forward – sometimes by repairing the past, and sometimes by clarifying the future.
Whimsical tidbit: This is Keira Knightley’s first singing role, and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine’s first acting role.
Interesting Sidenote: In the way that Kelly’s vibe resonates with that of Polynesian women (“Whale Rider” and “Moana” being spot-on in previous months, so also does it resonate with the inspirational, dream-honoring spirit of writer/director John Carney, who also wrote and directed “Sing Street,” another pitch-perfect match we used earlier.
Dir. John Carney (also wrote). Perf. Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Adam Levine, Hailee Steinfeld, Catherine Keener, Mos Def (as Yasiin Bey). The Weinstein Company, 2013.
As You Watch
Click here to review our August forecast, then consider the following as you watch this month’s selection.
- Dan’s challenges were created internally— when success disappeared due to lost pas- sion, resistance to change, and an unwill- ingness to work in harmony (hah, pun!).
- Gretta’s challenge arrives externally, when success seduced—presenting choices and requiring her to set standards and priorities that determine her direction and destiny.
- Using the forecast refresher as a reference, note where characters did each of these. How many can you spot? What happened?
